GIRLHOOD
11th-16th November 2025
Girlhood reflects on the quiet rituals and gestures that move with us as we grow - small acts of care, mimicry, and connection that begin early and stay with us into adulthood.
Verity Amelia's paintings explore the spaces between people - the stillness, warmth, and unspoken
understanding that shape our sense of belonging. Rooted in memory and shared experience, Girlhood captures moments of tenderness and familiarity that might otherwise pass unnoticed: the closeness of friendship, the small repetitions of care, and the ways we learn to see ourselves through others.
The series looks at how those early connections stay with us - how gestures first learned in childhood echo through adulthood, carrying traces of comfort, strength, and connection.
Based in Edinburgh and a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, Girlhood marks Verity Amelia's first solo exhibition, developed with the support of the John Preston Trust, and presented at Custom House, Leith (11-16 November 2025).

Memory Tent
The Memory Tent sits in a separate room as a space to slow down and be together. It’s built from patchworked bedsheets and fabrics, recalling the makeshift tents made in childhood but reimagined for now. The installation brings a sense of play and reflection into the exhibition - a place to sit, talk, or think quietly about what girlhood means to you. Visitors are invited to write and leave their own thoughts, creating a shared record of memories and connections that continue to grow throughout the show.
